Chris Young Sextet The Yardbird Jazz Club Friday 15th March 6pm

Chris young is a jazz alto saxophonist and composer based in Birmingham. Chris recently graduated from the Birmingham conservatoire with a first class degree after studying under Mike Williams, Hans Koller, Jean Toussaint and Andrew Bain. Chris has performed on the Budva stage at Cheltenham Jazz Festival both as a sideman and with his sextet. He also has performed at Mostly Jazz Festival, Blue Rock Festival, Stadt Buhl Festival and Maidstone River Festivals, as well as various clubs around Birmingham and London.

The Chris Young Sextet was formed in the summer of 2010. The group performs original material focusing on integrating the voice as a front line instrument as well as exploring a linear approach to comping with the vibes and guitar trying to create a two-line counterpoint to comp the soloist. The group received a mention in Jazzwise magazine for their performance at mostly jazz festival: 'The most notable performance on the Saturday was scorching alto player Chris young.' the sextet are also featured on a compilation album from the festival alongside; Beats and Pieces Big Band, Steve Tromans’ Debop Band, Noose, Hidden Orchestra amongst other bands. The group is looking forward to recording an album of the compositions during the upcoming summer.
